What is a Cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens, which lies behind the iris and pupil. Cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss in people over 40 and are the principal cause of blindness worldwide.

Symptoms include blurry or hazy vision, increased sensitivity to glare, difficulty seeing at night, and faded colors. Fortunately, cataracts are very treatable with surgery.

Our Surgical Approach

Our surgeons use phacoemulsification — a minimally invasive technique using ultrasound energy to break up and remove the cloudy lens through a tiny incision. The procedure typically takes less than 20 minutes and requires no stitches.

Intraocular Lens (IOL) Options

  • Monofocal IOL — Corrects vision at one distance (usually far). Reading glasses may still be needed.
  • Toric IOL — Corrects astigmatism along with cataracts.
  • Multifocal IOL — Provides clear vision at multiple distances, reducing dependence on glasses.
  • Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) — Offers a continuous range of vision with minimal side effects.

What to Expect

Cataract surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure. You will be awake but comfortable with numbing eye drops. Most patients notice improved vision within 24 hours. Full recovery typically takes 4–6 weeks.

After Surgery Care

  • Use prescribed eye drops as directed
  • Avoid rubbing or pressing on your eye
  • Wear eye shield at night for the first week
  • Attend all follow-up appointments
  • Avoid strenuous activity for 2 weeks
